CFB 27 Coach Abilities Tier List: The Best and Worst Skills to Unlock

Coach abilities are your primary method of improving your program in CFB 27 Dynasty Mode, and not all abilities are created equal. Some abilities fundamentally change how you build your program. Others are marginal upgrades that barely move the needle. This guide ranks every major coach ability and recommends optimal unlock orders.

S-Tier: Must-Have Abilities

Head Coach abilities that should be your first unlocks in every dynasty: "Expanded Recruiting Board" (see more prospects), "Strong Initial Contact" (better first impressions with recruits), and "Offseason Training Boost" (improved player development). These three abilities impact the most important aspects of dynasty mode — recruiting and development — and provide value in every single season.

"Dream School" (unlock locked prospects) is S-tier for programs that are not traditional recruiting powers. Being able to get a foot in the door with prospects who initially have no interest is game-changing.

A-Tier: High-Impact Abilities

Abilities that significantly improve specific aspects of your program: "Visit Impact" (campus visits are more effective), "Transfer Interest" (better portal success), "Position-Specific Development" (boosted growth for a position group), and "Hot Hand" (in-game ratings boosts). These are strong investments after your S-tier abilities are secured.

In CFB 27, "Visit Impact" is particularly valuable because visits are the most powerful closing tool in recruiting. Improving their effectiveness compounds with every visit you schedule.

B-Tier: Situational Abilities

Abilities that are valuable in specific situations: "Pipeline Boosts" (only valuable if you have established pipelines), "Contract Negotiations" (only matters when changing jobs), "Stadium Atmosphere" (moderate home-field advantage boost). These are fine investments if your situation calls for them but are not universal priorities.

C-Tier: Trap Abilities

Abilities that look better than they are: "Scouting Accuracy" (the base scouting is good enough), "Social Media Following" (minimal impact), and "Program Tradition" (too slow, takes too many seasons to pay off). Avoid these early in your dynasty — invest in abilities that produce immediate and substantial returns.
